If you've just loaded my friends page, this post should always be at the top, unless I've messed up the post-dating thing. It's what used to be my userinfo, which was entirely too full of Schtuff. If you want to get to know me, most of the stuff that's relevant is behind the cut-tag below.

If you are going to add me, I strongly suggest that you read this entry first.

This young woman is the daughter of a Facebook friend of mine. She has been missing for, I believe, a week. If you are in the Northern California area especially, please keep an eye out for her. Her mother's worried sick (understandably so). And please boost the signal. Thanks.

What can I say? My brain sometimes takes random odds and ends that I've read and puts them together in startling new ways. That's the case with this hybrid analysis of two works I've read recently: Greta Christina's AlterNet article Why Being Liberal Really Is Better Than Being Conservative, and Issendai's post How To Keep Someone With You Forever. I've read the work that Greta Christina refers to - it's by a moral psychologist named Jonathan Haidt, and I used his work in my master's thesis.

Each of these articles has important things to say about various moral, social and psychological issues of our time. But today it occurred to me that Haidt's five dimensions of morality, which Christina breaks down tidily for us as "harm/care, fairness, authority, loyalty, and purity" also explain why and how the sick systems that Issendai describes come about in the first place.

Just a PSA. I know I've said this before, but Events on my flist have prompted the reminder.

If you and another friend of mine are angry with one another, consider one another to be enemies, or dislike each other, that's not my problem. I am, in fact, an adult and capable of hearing both sides without siding with one or the other.

If you need me to side with you, it won't go over well. If you want to complain about the other friend of mine, I can listen. If you need me to agree with you that their behavior is bad, I will probably agree that from your point of view and for your situation, it certainly is. If you need someone to say "there, there" or agree that things hurt, I can do that.

If you expect me, however, to tell you what they said to me in confidence, or to agree with you that they are a Big Mean Evil Bad Nasty Person, we may run into difficulties, because I will not do that. If you expect me to defriend them to prove I'm loyal to you, I will not do that, and I will consider the request a breach of friendship, and quite possibly defriend you instead. I don't do loyalty under pressure. I do it because I choose to.

So as long as you're okay with me remaining a neutral party (aka Switzerland), we have no problems. If you don't want to be friends with Switzerland, or if you expect me to take sides, you know what to do.

Switzerland doesn't take sides.

This has been a Public Service Announcement, brought to you by the number 3 and the letters W, T and F.

(Sheesh.)

A few things to think about, ponder, and poke at.

First, an e-mail forward posted by a friend in zir journal (who can identify zirself if zie chooses to): Democrats vs. Republicans - Different OutlooksCollapse )

A few links:

Dr. Jonathan Haidt may have part of the answer to Why Do People Vote Republican?. As Haidt puts it, "the second rule of moral psychology is that morality is not just about how we treat each other (as most liberals think); it is also about binding groups together, supporting essential institutions, and living in a sanctified and noble way. When Republicans say that Democrats "just don't get it," this is the "it" to which they refer." And if that's the case, we better start paying some quick attention.

LithiumCola on Daily Kos shows us, in an incisive analysis, that this election, just like the 2000 and 2004 elections, isn't about who should run the government. It's about what type of government we should have, if any. As he explains, "To put it simply, the 2008 Presidential race will not be over politics but -- as it was in 2000 and 2004 -- over the purpose of politics. In that sense it will be a meta-debate, and one that many will miss because they thought it was settled long ago."

Slacktivist tosses out the idea that Barack Obama believes we can be better than we are in Favorite Teachers: "But it is precisely the substance, not the style, of Obama's oratory that has been winning over his audiences. That substance is egalitarian, democratic, inclusive and aspirational -- precisely the opposite of elitist or condescending."

Bohemian Darling on Daily Kos challenges her conservative friends on the issue of taxes and taxation with I am a Rich Liberal, saying "If you're willing to say that you'd rather keep more of your earnings, while more than half of Americans suffer a tax burden that would be easy for you to bear, and deny the entire population programs that could potentially (if we hold our legislators responsible) provide all of our fellow countrymen the opportunity to live at least somewhat as well as I do, with my measly 50k/year, then I can only call it greed." The comments on this piece are great, too. Read them.

Finally, Dahlia Lithwick on Slate hedges her bet that Joe Biden can beat Sarah Palin by pretending she's a man. And that he's not Joe Biden, in How to Debate a Girl, and Win.

Unlocked so you can share it around. Have at it, folks.

Due to the busy schedule and some security concerns, I have had to thin my flist a little bit. If you were deflisted, it's very likely I've added you to griff_reads instead. griff_reads is where I put the people who have written things I like and whom I want to continue reading, but who have not, for whatever reason, added me back. This flist-thinning was only the people who fit into that category. If you and I are mutually friended, this does not apply to you.

This is my work-around for LJ's system where if you want to read someone, you also have to let them see what you write. It's clunky, but it works for me. This is just a PSA for those who might wonder what happened. I don't expect there'll be many who do, but there's always the off-chance that people haunt Joule and wonder why they were flisted or deflisted.

Back to your regularly scheduled LJ, folks. Ta.

List 5 things which are basic common knowledge in your culture, which people outside are unfamiliar with. This is not about obscurity, but something everyday to you, that others go "bzuh?" at.

1. All soft drinks are served with ice in them unless you specifically request otherwise. Same for water. And if you request otherwise, people will think you're a little strange.

2. Passing on the right never earns you a ticket. (This seriously freaked out a friend of mine from the Northeast once when we were driving back from LAX and I moved into the right lane to get around some slow-moving traffic. He started rubbernecking for the cop.)

3. Chinese restaurants do not serve General Tso's chicken. Most Southern California natives have never even heard of General Tso's chicken, unless we've traveled outside the area.

4. Towns and cities don't have space between them here, due to extreme urban sprawl. You only know you've crossed into the next city because the color of the street signs changes.

5. Freeway exits aren't numbered; they're named. You don't get off at "exit 51," you get off at "Chapman Avenue."

That's my five; there's no doubt a number of them that I missed because they're so common-sense to me and I've never seen anyone get freaked out about them. These five, I've seen out-of-region visitors get freaked out about.

There's a great discussion about this over on vito_excalibur's journal, too.

Over to you!

And for a bonus, here"s the "You know you"re from the Inland Empire when..." list!Collapse )

I'm going to be thinning my flist. Mostly, I'll be removing communities, but if I remove you and you want to be added back, just let me know. The flist is getting overwhelming, and I feel like I'm not doing justice to a lot of good people who expect me to read and not just skim. You can consider this amnesty to drop me if you've been meaning to, as well, and I will not be offended.

I care about all of you, and I don't want to keep giving only half measure in my attention. I hope everyone can understand. Thanks.

From inflectionpoint:

Call the Governor and say thank you! Tell him you support marriage equity.

Take just a minute to tell the gov how you support equal marriage rights. After you've done this send it on to all supporters you know.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is receiving large numbers of phone calls from the supporters of "Limits on Marriage" (The constitutional amendment baning same sex marriage in California) about his comment to a group of Log Cabin Republicans that he wouldn't support a constitutional amendment.

We don't want him to go back on his word. He must hear from us too.

Call, email or write him and thank him for his declining to support this initiative.(they don't ask what state you are from) The aide lobolance spoke to yesterday was so glad to be called as most of his calls were from the "other side."

Now it is automated and you will not talk to anyone, just push the number for pro Supreme Court decision.

To email go to http://gov.ca.gov/interact, hit email tab and select Supreme Court decision on Same Sex Marriage. On the next screen you must click PRO. It's a little confusing since we're talking about the initiative for which we are con. Then just a couple of words of thanks are all you need. No long letter required.

To send a letter:

State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814

Phone: 916-445-2841

Fax: 916-558-3160 ( new number )

Anything you do will be most appreciated!

I've decided.

Having done this today twice already, and feeling good about having done it, I declare today an international holiday. Today is Tell Someone Something Good About Themselves Day. (Yes, I've just made this up. So what? It's still a great holiday, don't you think?)

You can, of course, tell more than one someone something good. And you can tell more than one someone more than one something good, too. But make the effort to reach out to someone today who needs cheering up or just needs some encouragement or might need to be told that they really do rock your world. We all need that sometimes. And you'd be amazed at how good it makes you feel to do it.

That's all. Go on now.

First things first: I am going to be calling a certain group of people out in this post. If you did not snark at the people who were striking, you are not one of the people I'm calling out and you can feel free to skip the rest of the post if you need to, because I'm pretty pissed off. Even if you didn't participate in the strike, that's okay, as long as you didn't snark at those who were participating where I could see it. If you did snark at those who were striking in a place where I could see it, well... this post is for you.

I got lucky.

Danny came into my life. We went on our first date. Two weeks later, we were living together and it was like we always had been.

Five years. Here's to fifty or seventy more, if we should both live so long.

I love you, babe.

Since I don't really seem to have coherent words for this vile situation, I'm copying my friend's exact post here, with pointers from the comments to it afterwards. I would link, but it's flocked and there may be a good reason why, so I'm not going to state who it is unless told it's okay:
You send a bazillion emails every day, what is one more?
Take a few to contact the UK Home Office, if you would, to suggest that sending a 19-year-old gay man back to Iran, after his partner was hanged there -- after naming him as his partner for the 'homosexual acts' that got him killed -- is not in line with freedom or liberation etc. The kid's father has said if the government doesn't kill the young man, he'll do the job himself.

Kid's going to get sent back to Britain from Holland in the next 72 hours, and from there deported back to Iran to swing at the end of a rope.

It's two minutes, people. Send an email. Consider it the birthday present you never sent to me. Then post it on your blog and we'll be caught up for all those Christmases too.
Do eet.
In comments, the email to send it to is: public.enquiries@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Suggested text for the email, from a commenter to the post (again, locked post, so again, no names unless I'm told it's okay): After reading about the pending deportation of Mehdi Kazemi to Iran in The Independent, I would like to request that all efforts be taken to grant him asylum, up to and including intervention by the Home Secretary.

Thank you.

Firstname Lastname

Of course, that's just suggested text. You can certainly say whatever you please. I added a line to the end of the email: "To send him back when he is facing a certain death sentence is absolutely vile and unconscionable."

Thank you all for doing this.

I want to get a sample across the world, not just the United States, but as I'm talking about prices, it would help if your responses were in dollars and gallons (I know, and I'm sorry :( There's a handy-dandy conversion page for currency here, and for fluid measurements here). I'm the only one who can see the individual results.

ETA: Gah, I KNEW that looked wrong. The mileage question - it should be 20, not 200. Reduce those to tens-units, not hundreds-units. My bad.
ETA2: Actually, skip the first mileage question. I'll make an additional poll question (separate poll) and put that in in a moment. There's an additional one-question poll with the correct values added to the end of this post.

Questions about gasoline prices and vehicle use patterns. PLEASE fill out!Collapse )

Thanks for filling this out. Tell your friends - I want a broad sample if I can get one.

The last day or so on my flist has been partially taken up with news and grieving about the untimely death of filkergem, who apparently died in a house fire on Saturday.

I am outside the filk community, for the most part, and so I didn't have the chance to know him or his music, but my condolences are extended to everyone who was touched by his music and his life. From all accounts, he was someone I would have enjoyed knowing, and I'm sorry I didn't get the chance.

I just want to say a few things.

First, if I have wronged or hurt you in the past year (or, for that matter, any time previously), and you want to talk to me about it, please let me know. If I have, and you do not want to talk to me about it, I will accept your silence as well, and I wish you well in either case.

Second, I wish all of you a New Year filled with health, wealth, wisdom, safety, and joy; and thank all of you for the year just past, which you have all helped me fill with health, happiness, and wisdom.

Finally, please be safe tonight, whether you're going out or staying in, and be sure to put your best foot forward as you step across the threshold of the year. I'll raise a glass to all of you as the clock strikes twelve.

Goodbye, 2007. You've been good to me, on the whole, and your successor has some big shoes to fill, but I'll remember you fondly.

Sleeping until I woke up naturally rather than by the alarm clock. I got almost eight hours. I'm still yawning (after waking up an hour ago) but I don't feel sleepy or grouchy. This may possibly have something to do with having had my shot last night. I notice that I sleep much more soundly and completely when I've had my shot.

I'm going to share a bunch of links this morning, and one gripe, so let's get the gripe out of the way first so's y'all can get at the tasty link sausage I'm going to give you:

Cut for Project Runway spoilersCollapse )

Okay, linkies and pancakes for all! (Well, okay, not pancakes. But linkies!):

archanglrobriel gives us the definitive answer to the incessant question: Is it Christmas yet? Huh? Huh? Is it?

Michael Schwern gives a down-to-earth lesson in Geek Etiquette, with particular emphasis on why all that social noise is important (even though we geeks know it's really just pointless).

supergee points out several political links: Apparently Fred Thompson wants to be saddled and mounted; Conservatism: it really is "I know you are, but what am I?"; and finally Required genital configurations for US military service. The mind, it boggles.

kshandra points us at Thirty Years of LucasFilm Christmas Cards. Kinda cool.

And finally, ozarque finds this amazingly funny and disturbing translation of "'Twas The Night Before Christmas" into legalese ("Whereas, on or about the night prior to Christmas, there did occur at a certain improved piece of real property (hereinafter "the House") a general lack of stirring by all creatures therein, including, but not limited to a mouse....")

Final comment: Is it just me, or are the GEICO commercials getting more and more amusing? Last night I saw one with James Lipton from Inside the Actor's Studio, which cracked me up in a big way. It's disturbing when the advertisements begin to get better than the shows they're sponsoring.

Good morning, LJ.

Something that I need to remember, and rather often. I've got better at it over time, I think... but there's always room for improvement.

If wisdom's ways you wisely seek,
Five things observe with care:
To whom you speak,
Of whom you speak,
And how, and when, and where.

Wise words.
